The best window tint kits don’t just look good, but also offer a range of benefits. Auto window tinting prevents onlookers from peeking into your car, blocks out ultraviolet (UV) rays that will damage the upholstery, and helps provide heat reduction in the car’s interior. Our team recommends the five best car window tint kits based on a variety of factors, including customer feedback and company reputation.

Should I Tint My Car Windows?

Considering an aftermarket window tint? Lars Dolder, the former owner of Tint Tech Mobile, a mobile automotive tinting service in central North Carolina, told us that many vehicles come with a level tint applied, usually to the rear window.

“That is strictly aesthetic,” he says, “whereas aftermarket window tint is a health measure as much as it is an aesthetic addition to your car. You can get UV protection, IR (infrared) protection [and] heat reduction in the car when you install tint aftermarket. I can’t drive a car anymore that doesn’t have window tint on it.”

As Dolder mentioned, window tint helps block UV rays and offers greater privacy by making it harder to see inside, but there are several other benefits:

  • Reduces upholstery, trim, and other parts of the vehicle’s interior exposure to UV rays, preserving them from wearing out or fading quickly
  • Reduce glare experienced by the driver
  • Keeps the interior of the vehicle cooler

How Long Does It Take To Tint A Car?

The length of time an installation takes depends on how much car window tint film you are having applied to your vehicle. Most experts say it can take between one to three hours, depending on the car, and if the tint shop has to remove a pre-existing tint.

Car Window Tint Buyers Guide

When comparing the best car window tint kits for your vehicle, our team believes that paying attention to thecut, material, tint percentage,UV protection, and application method will serve you well. Also, be sure to research your local laws regarding vehicle tints. We recommend checking your state DMV website before purchasing or applying any window tint kits.

You can buy a car window tint that comes already formatted for your type of vehicle or in a roll for you to cut.

  • Pre-cut: When you go to buy a pre-cut window tint, prepare to share your car’s make, model, and year. The manufacturer will then cut the tint to the right size and send it to you. This type is usually more expensive.
  • Rolled:This type of tint comes as a roll that you cut to fit the size of your windows. It’s usually cheaper, but it takes more time to apply.

Window tints range from DIY kits to kits requiring professional installation. Usually, automotive window tints are made from one of the following materials:

  • Dyed Polyester: Dyed film is the most common type of material used for window tints. It’s affordable, has a long life, and is relatively easy to install.
  • Metallic:Metallic tints offer more protection from heat and UV rays. However, they can affect GPS signals and cell phone service.
  • Carbon:Carbon tints have carbon particles mixed in the film. These block even more heat than metallic tints and don’t impact GPS signals or phone service.
  • Ceramic: Offers the most heat reflection and glare reduction. It’s also the most expensive option.

Tint Percentage

Tint percentage is the darkness level of the tint and how much light it allows through the window. The five percent or “limo” tint percentage blocks the most light, only allowing five percent through the window. This amount is typically only legal in backseat windows that the driver doesn’t have to look through. The amount of tint you can apply to the front windshield will vary by where you live.

“So it depends on your state,” Dolder told us, referring to variances across state lines for legally allowable tint percentages. “What people would often want is 20 percent. That is kind of a sweet spot where it looks good, it’s not so dark it can actually inhibit and impair your sight.”

Dolder added that some customers only wanted the function of a window tint without the blacked-out aesthetic. He said a 50 percent window tint was typically the solution.

“[It] doesn’t look much darker than the window without tint,” he says. But if you have a high-quality ceramic tint, normally carbon-ceramic, it has almost 100 percent UV protection, almost 100 percent IR protection, and it reduces the heat tremendously inside the car.”

UV Protection

You’ll want to consider how much protection from the sun your window tint gives you. A high-quality tint with more UV protection will keep the inside of your car cool and protect your car’s upholstery from damage.

Application Method

Applying the tint isn’t as simple as peeling off the backing and sticking it to your window. It will take time and require tools. To make tint installation easier, you can purchase an application tool kit.

Dolder stated that thorough cleaning of the vehicle’s glass is usually the most important step.

It’s remarkable how dirty you’re windows are even if you clean them normally… especially behind the gaskets and all these little areas where the tint will have to slide in,” he said. “You’ll find gunk and glue and dirt and dust, so you have to work hard at ensuring that it’s really a clean starting point before you put the adhesive on there because anything left behind will show through. It’s exaggerated once the tint is installed.”

Our Review Standards

To select the car window tints featured in this buyers guide, our team first combed through dozens of resources such as DIY mechanic and auto enthusiast forums, manufacturer and car modification-specific websites, instruction manuals from manufacturers, and reviews from online retailers. We pay particularly close attention to quality reviews and recommendations that highlight the quality of warranties, customer service support, build quality, materials, and overall reliability.

We then have our network of experts share their thoughts on the selected window tints. These experts have over 100 years of combined experience in aftermarket auto fields ranging from detailing to accessories to tires, and everything in between. These experts helped us identify the qualities that would be most important to someone looking for a window tint and the standout brands in each category.

We also factored in the quantity and quality of online retailer reviews from websites such as Amazon, RealTruck, Advance Auto Parts, and more. We looked at factors such as standout customer reviews, prices, meaningful superlatives, and discount shipping eligibility.

Why You Can Trust Us

Since 2020, we have published over 200 auto product reviews in an effort to make shopping for auto products easier. Our team of writers, editors, researchers, and product experts collaborates to thoroughly vet top products. We try to perform in-house testing on real vehicles whenever possible before making our recommendations.

When testing is not feasible, however, our aim is to make your life easier by doing all the online research for you and presenting that research in the form of easy-to-read product comparisons and buyers guides, rather than outright recommendations. Our product review team likes that this is one of the more highly-reviewed pre-cut tints at the $50 price point. • Pre-cut
  • All windows plus back windshield set
